A one day Lead lecture series was organized jointly by the departments of Zoology and Microbiology, St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru on 15 February 2019 for the final B.Sc. students of biological Sciences. Eminent scientists from four reputed research laboratories addressed the students on current issues pertaining to Human health and welfare.
The first session was taken up by Dr Jayarama S. Kadandale, Professor and Head, Clinical and Molecular Cytogenetics, Centre for Human Genetics, Biotech Park, Bengaluru. He addressed the students on the topic “Role Of Clinical And Molecular Cytogenetics In Diagnosing Genetic Disorders’ mainly dealing on chromosomal alteration, conventional and cutting edge cytogenetic techniques, chromosomal nomenclature, common cytogenetic disorders and diagnosis, genetic counselling, gene aberrations and comparative genomic hybridisation.
The second session was taken up by DR B.R. Sathish Rao, Professor & Head, Division of Radiobiology & Toxicology, School of Life Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. He addressed the students on the topic – ‘Benchside to Bedside” Human Impact of clinical investigations which included Therapeutic drug discovery, pipeline,translational research and personalized medicine, nanoparticles for targeted anticancer drug delivery, cancer, failure of chemotherapy hyperthermia and its history, nanotechnology and causes of DNA damage.
The third lead lecture was given by Dr. Anu Appaiah K.A., Senior Principal Scientist, Microbiology and Fermentation technology, Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru. The lecture was on the topic “Value addition of waste-the next generation strategy”. He enlightened the students about innovative and informative methods of Post harvest technology stimulating agricultural production, Innovation in material usage, Industrial products from Agro waste, Electricity from Biogas using human waste, Bio-mason, Water recycling and harmful effects of Plastic.
The fourth session was by Dr Prakash Peralam Yegneshwara, Associate Professor in Microbiology & In charge Mycology Laboratory, Centre for Basic Sciences Kasturba Medical College – Manipal Academy of Higher Education. He addressed on the topic “Fungi-A bane or boon”. He introduced the students to the world of fungi and gave an awareness about fungal infections and its significance in India, surprising facts about different fungus and the importance of considering the clinical effects of these fungi.
The topics were very informative and followed by a question and answer session. The students and faculty got an opportunity to interact with the eminent scientists on one to one basis and got relevant information about recent developments in Biological Science and career opportunities for their future.
