A ‘Larvae Hunting and Awareness’ program was organized by District Administration, Mangalore City Corporation and District Health Department in collaboration with Department of Collegiate Education on 18 August, 2019 at Abhishek Mandir near Kadri Temple. The program began at 9.00 am. After registration, students were divided into groups/ teams. 8 students (two teams comprising of 4 volunteers in each group) from the NSS units of St. Agnes college had participated in the programme. During the programme a ‘Larvae Hunt’ Competition was conducted.
Mr. Shashikanth Senthil, District Commisioner, Manguluru, was the chief guest. The chief guest addressed the gathering and spoke on the importance of cleanliness in maintaining general public health and prevention of vector borne diseases. Then the organizers explained the expected service from each group and guided the groups with tips on cleaning the allotted area and collection of mosquito larvae. Each group was allotted one supervisor from the health department to guide in the task given. Ms. M. Nagamma guided the NSS volunteers of St. Agnes College. She instructed the volunteers to go to the houses near Kadri Temple and create awareness regarding cleanliness of the surroundings and asked them to collect mosquito larvae in the bottles, provided by the organizers, if found and submit it to the organizing committee along with the details like place, source of larvae breeding and cleanliness of the area. The volunteers visited 24 houses and some shops to complete the task given to them and during their visit they got mosquito larvae from 10 houses. The participating teams reported back with the needed details at 12.00 noon and also did a presentation of the places visited and the task they performed.
