St Agnes College (Autonomous), Centre for Postgraduate Studies and Research, Mangalore organized an orientation programme for the newly admitted students at the PG auditorium on 11 September 2023. The major objective of the programme was to make the students aware of the academic aspects of the courses, the rules and regulations of the college and focusing on research. The programme was inaugurated with the lighting of the lamp by Principal, Sr Dr M. Venissa A.C. and other dignitaries.

Day-wise Schedule:

11 Sept 2023 – ” Library Facilities and Resources ” by Dr. Vishala.
12 Sept 2023 – “ACT During Stress” by Dr. Premanand.
13 Sept 2023 – “Professional Etiquttes” by Mrs. Hannabel Alva.
14 Sept 2023 – “Enhancing interpersonal relationships and social support” by Dr. Kavyashree.
15 Sept 2023 – “The Power of Emotional Intelligence” by Mr. Rajath.

Day 1: The session commenced with a briefing of library facilities and resources available at the college by Dr Vishala, Librarian of the college. With the help of a PowerPoint presentation, the gathering was instructed on the rules and regulations of the library. During the session the students were explained in detail on the databases such as Nlist and JGATE where students can access different journals, articles and papers related to their study. Besides, students were informed regarding the access to digital library from the college. Students were advised strictly not to use mobile phones. The publications of the faculties and students were the key highlights. Finally, the session ended with a warm wish to all the students’ for their journey ahead.

Day 2: The programme commenced with an insightful session led by Dr Premanand, HoD, Department of Psychology. The focus of this session was “ACT During Stress”. Dr Premanand began the session with a quote saying, “Only the truth of who you are will set you free” he also provided the overview of the session’s objectives and its importance. Dr Premanand elucidated the concept of stress, its causes, and the potential negative impacts on individuals in both personal and professional settings. The core principles of ACT, such as acceptance, mindfulness, and commitment, were explained in a clear and concise manner. He also shared practical strategies, including mindfulness exercises and techniques that participants can apply to effectively manage stress in their daily lives. The session included interactive exercises where participants actively engaged in practicing ACT techniques, fostering a dynamic and engaging learning environment. The active participation and enthusiastic engagement of the induction programme participants demonstrated the relevance and significance of the session.

Day 3: Professional etiquette among students is essential for building a strong foundation for future career success. The session started off with being punctual and managing the time in order to meet the deadlines and commitments. The resource person for this session was Mrs. Hannabel H. Alva, HoD, Department of Big Data Analytics. The session highlighted the need for professional etiquettes in all events such as work place and classrooms. The importance of dress code, time management, respect for others, acknowledging team mates and supporting members, e-mail and telephone communication were some of the highlights. The session was energized with group activities to improve team building among the students. Finally, the session concluded by wishing the participants to nurture professional etiquettes during the academic journey that serves them well as they transition into their career.

Day 4: The induction program on 14 September 2023 was led by Dr Kavyashree K.B, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology. The event commenced with an ice-breaking session designed to foster group cohesion and encourage interaction among students. Following this, an engaging game titled “Win as Much as You Can” was organized, with the primary objective of promoting group decision-making and facilitating interaction among the students. This activity also aimed to address the concept of healthy competition among peers. Subsequently, a case study was presented to the students, focusing on understanding the challenges of peer pressure and the importance of social support in navigating such situations. The orientation program provided an insightful and interactive start to the academic journey for the first-year postgraduate students.

Day 5: Mr. Raajath Naik from the Department of PG Psychology was the resource person for the induction programme for freshers pursuing their Masters. The central theme of the session was “The Power of Emotional Intelligence.” The event comprised engaging activities aimed at enhancing emotional intelligence among the participants. Mr. Raajath commenced the session with a deep dive into relaxation techniques, emphasizing the importance of deep breathing in managing emotions effectively. This was followed by an exciting game of Emotion Charades, which encouraged students to recognize and express emotions non-verbally. Then, the importance of fostering emotional intelligence was made known to the students with various concepts primarily from Daniel Goleman’s Book – “Emotional Intelligence”. The program concluded with Improve Dialogues, promoting spontaneous emotional expression and effective communication.
