A session was organised on “Academic Integrity and Plagiarism” on 12 January 2024 at St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru. The program began with Mr Chaco introducing the resource speaker, Dr. Appasaheb Naikal, a professional from the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK). Dr Abba Naikal provided a comprehensive overview of the key topics related to academic integrity and plagiarism. The session covered the following highlights:

● Meaning of Plagiarism: Dr. Naikal elucidated the concept of plagiarism, emphasising the unauthorised use or representation of someone else’s work as one’s own.
● Types of Plagiarism: The speaker discussed various forms of plagiarism, including verbatim copying, paraphrasing without proper citation, and self-plagiarism.
● Why Do People Plagiarise: An insightful exploration into the motivations behind plagiarism, shedding light on academic pressures, lack of time management, and ethical considerations.
● Ways of Plagiarism: Dr. Naikal detailed the methods individuals employ to plagiarize and the evolving challenges in detecting such instances.

The session delved into three prominent case studies:

Jayson Blair (Former New York Times Reporter): A compelling analysis of Blair’s infamous plagiarism scandal, offering valuable insights into the consequences of ethical lapses in journalism.

Professor Matthew Whitaker (Arizona State University Professor): An examination of the academic world, focusing on a case involving a respected professor, illustrating that plagiarism can occur at any level.

Springer Published Article: Dr Naikal discussed a real-life case involving a published article, highlighting the importance of academic journals in maintaining scholarly integrity.

Dr Naikal provided practical tips and guidelines on avoiding plagiarism, stressing the importance of proper citation, referencing, and understanding the rules of academic integrity. Further, he showcased the Digital Library and Information Centre interface of IIMK. He demonstrated how to extract information about a listed company from the interface, enriching the session with practical insights.

The session concluded with a graphical case study presented in the form of comics, depicting a real-life incident related to plagiarism. This innovative approach engaged participants and reinforced the consequences of academic dishonesty. Dr Naikal concluded the session by encouraging St Agnes College students to visit IIMs and other top business schools for experience. The informative and interactive session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Fencita, a student of MBA. The session effectively educated participants on the nuances of academic integrity and plagiarism, combining theoretical knowledge with case studies to create a well-rounded learning experience.
